In Loving Memory of Charles R. Borrok

1940–2026

Charles R. Borrok lived a life of achievement, influence, generosity, and deep personal impact. To many, he was known as a highly respected leader in commercial real estate. To others, he was a mentor, friend, father figure, trusted advisor, colleague, and a man whose presence left a lasting impression.

Charles passed away on June 11, 2026, at the age of 85. He was predeceased by his wife, Cathy, and his brother, Peter. He is survived by his biological son, Andrew, his daughter-in-law, Tanya, and his four biological grandchildren, among the numerous people whose lives Charles positively impacted.

This memorial was created so that those who knew Charles can share their stories, memories, photographs, and reflections. A life as full as Charles’s should not be remembered only by a few lines in an obituary. It should be remembered through the voices of the people he helped, guided, loved, challenged, supported, and inspired.

A Life of Achievement

Charles built an extraordinary career in commercial real estate, beginning in 1966 at Wm. A. White & Sons, one of New York’s oldest and most respected real estate firms. He rose through the business with intelligence, discipline, judgment, and an exceptional ability to understand people and transactions. By 1978, he had become one of the four owners of the firm.

In 1984, Charles helped negotiate Wm. A. White & Sons’ acquisition of Tishman East Management Company. In 1986, he and his partners sold Wm. A. White/Tishman East to Grubb & Ellis, where Charles later served as President of the New York Metropolitan Region. During that period, he was ranked as the number one broker in the company for six consecutive years.

In 1992, Charles joined Cushman & Wakefield, where he ultimately served as Executive Vice Chairman. Over the course of his career, he was involved in the leasing of tens of millions of square feet around the world and played a role in the purchase, sale, leasing, and development of many significant properties. His work extended far beyond New York, touching transactions in Canada, Puerto Rico, England, Italy, Russia, India, Egypt, Korea, Japan, and the Philippines.

Charles specialized in large, complicated, high-stakes real estate transactions. But those who worked with him knew that his true value was not only in the square footage, the deal volume, or the titles. It was in the way he thought, the way he carried himself, and the way he taught others to approach business with seriousness, professionalism, and integrity.

He was sharp, direct, strategic, and principled. He understood that real estate was ultimately a people business. His success came not only from knowing properties and markets, but from knowing how to read a room, how to earn trust, how to negotiate with discipline, and how to do things the right way.

A Mentor and Teacher

To those fortunate enough to work with him, Charles was more than a broker. He was a mentor, teacher, and example. He had a way of guiding people without lecturing them, correcting them without diminishing them, and pushing them to be better without making them feel small.

He taught lessons that extended beyond business: how to handle difficult situations with dignity, how to treat people properly, how to stay composed under pressure, how to keep your word, and how to carry yourself as a good person.

Charles had a strong presence. When he spoke, people listened. Not because he demanded attention, but because he had earned it. He brought experience, intelligence, confidence, and perspective into every conversation.

A Man of Generosity and Heart

Charles’s professional success was only one part of who he was. He was also a man of generosity, loyalty, and compassion. He supported people. He opened doors. He gave advice. He helped others find confidence in themselves.

In 2016, Charles was honored with the Humanitarian Award from the James E. Davis Foundation, an organization dedicated to reducing violence and promoting safety. That recognition reflected something many people already knew about him: beneath the strong exterior was a man who cared deeply about people and about the world around him.

Charles’s generosity was not performative. It was part of his character. He gave because he believed in helping. He showed up because loyalty mattered to him. He cared in the ways he knew how, often through action, advice, support, and quiet strength.

A Personal Reflection

For me personally, Charles was much more than a successful businessman. He was a father figure, a mentor, and someone who helped shape the person I became.

Charles came into my life through his relationship with my mother, but his care and influence did not end there. He treated me as his own son, and that bond became one of the most meaningful relationships of my life. Though we were not bound by blood, the bond Charles created with me and with my children was real, lasting, and deeply meaningful.

He reminded me that family is often proven through actions, not titles.

Over the years, Charles taught me lessons I will carry for the rest of my life. He taught me how to conduct myself in business, how to think before reacting, how to deal with difficult people, how to stand firm when necessary, and how to remain generous even when life is complicated.

Like many meaningful relationships, ours had periods of distance and later reconnection.

When we found our way back to each other, Charles showed humility, warmth, and love. We rebuilt our relationship, and I will always be grateful for the time we had, the conversations we shared, and the opportunity to tell him what he meant to me.

Charles was also incredibly special to my children, Charlotte, London, and Dash. He treated them with kindness, pride, and affection. They knew him as a grandfather-like presence in their lives. His connection to our family was so meaningful that Dash’s Jewish name was chosen in his honor, a lasting tribute to the role Charles played in our lives and the love we had for him.

His Legacy

Charles leaves behind a legacy of achievement, wisdom, strength, generosity, and influence.

His professional legacy can be measured in deals completed, properties transformed, careers shaped, and institutions served. But for those of us who loved him, his true legacy is far more personal.

It is found in the lessons he taught.

It is found in the confidence he gave others.

It is found in the doors he opened.

It is found in the friendships he built.

It is found in the stories people still tell.

It is found in the way he made people feel seen, valued, and capable.

Charles was intelligent, accomplished, generous, principled, and deeply influential. He was not perfect, none of us are, but he was real. He was loyal. He was strong. He cared. And he mattered deeply to many people.nput
